Andrea and Beth have been acting, dancing, writing, and ranting together for many years. A watershed moment in their creative lives came, as so many do, in university. While being taught that all women in the early modern period made their way in theatre through prostitution, the ladies suspected something was being left out. Reaching beyond classroom comparisons of English actresses of the 1600’s with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Beth and Andrea followed their curiosity and discovered Aphra Behn—they discovered, all on their own, a woman who had been all on her own. Aphra Behn was one of the first women to earn a living by writing, producing theatrical works in a time when women just didn’t do such things.
The story of Aphra Behn emboldened these two students and sparked a feminist fire. As real as any professor’s was Aphra’s influence on these two young women—who subsequently hijacked the class in question to present their own lecture, entitled Aphra Behn, Not Another Whore, to a rapt audience.
These two writers now bring you their own creative boston marriage in the same spirit of that lecture: at least a touch irreverent, certainly forward, and undeniably significant. A Boston Marriage features writing by Andrea and Beth and occasional guest authors. Their work includes invective rants and riotous comedy on a wide variety of topics-politics, pop culture, personal experiences, and so on. There’s also a section that aggregates links, stories, and websites of interest for your reading pleasure and outrage.
